HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT FOUNDATION SHADE

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT FOUNDATION SHADE

Hey lovelies! I know its really hard to get the perfect foundation match. Everyone has the struggle when it comes to finding the perfect foundation shade, the struggle is real. But don’t worry, I have some trick and technique to find out that true foundation shade. Keep reading to find out the secret for selecting your magical shade, it’s simpler than it sounds!

1. Find your skin tone

First, you’ll need to know what your skin tone is. Your skin tone refers to the natural color of your complexion which can range from fair to deep. Here’s how to determine where you fall within that range!

Fair – You’re very fair or have porcelain skin and burn easily.

Light – You have generally light-colored skin. You’re still pale but not quite as much as fair.

Medium – Your skin is a more medium color, Your skin tone isn’t super-dark or super-light but somewhere in-between.

Dark – You have dark skin and/or a deep complexion.

Focus on the area of your face near jawline not your cheek. The cheek is typically more pigmented and less reflective of your true tone.

2. Find you undertone

Your skin tone and undertone is different. Your skin tone refers to the complexion and the shade of your skin, whereas undertone refers to the color that come through your skin. The undertones of your skin are either cool, warm, or neutral. Sounds complicated but there are lots of tricks to finding your undertone, so keep reading!

You have a Cool undertone if the veins on your wrist are blue or purple, silver jewelry flatters your skin, you have a pink hue to your skin with red tones especially around your eyes and nose, and you tend to burn easily in the sun. Cool undertones appear in your complexion with hints of blue or pink.

You have a Neutral undertone if the veins on your wrist are blue-green or if you can’t really tell what color they are. Both gold and silver jewelry flatters your skin, and your skin doesn’t contain any distinguishable pink or yellow undertones. Neutral undertones are in-between of cool and warm.

You have a Warm undertone if the veins on your wrist are green or olive, gold jewelry flatters your skin, skin appears yellow in the sun, your skin contains very little redness, and you tend to tan easily. Warm undertones appear more yellow or golden.

3. Go to the store and swatch the foundation

Now that you know your undertone, go to the store and pick out at least 2-3 foundations that you think could be your match for your undertone. Don’t Rush to select, go in with the mindset for perfection. There are certain things to consider while you are testing out the product. So read carefully as its important!

If possible go with a fresh face but make sure you apply your skincare. When you don’t have the enough moisture on your skin you are not going to see the exact formula and the finish that the foundation provides. You may get cracking, look cakey.I know how busy we all are, most of us go after work or without the intention of buying the foundation so we have our makeup on. But I got you covered up. When you remove makeup you are also removing the base which makes your skin dry. Moisturizing is so important before applying foundation so whenever you remove the makeup to test the product don’t forget to moisturize your skin before putting on the foundation. If you go to shop on Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom or any beauty store they have lots of moisturizer on the sample so just apply it before you put on the foundation.

You shouldn’t swatch the foundation on hand rather swatch it on your jawline because your jawline shows how it matches with your neck, décolletage and forehead. You want something in the middle to match with. Also look for how it goes with your body tone. When testing out the product(shoutout to Sephora from which I learned) use the tools. Fingers sheers the coverage but the tools like brush applies the foundation with more coverage. It makes a massive difference.Swatch all products from the side of your jawline down to the base of your neck, then lightly blend the edges. The right match should blend perfectly into your skin!

4. Oxidization and Dryness

Some foundation may oxidize. That means it might change color (get darker) with exposure to air. Don’t grab the foundation after it matches when you swatch. Wait for at least 10-15 mins to observe how it looks on your skin. You might need to choose a lighter shade if it oxidizes.

Oxidization is one thing but the other thing is dryness. Oxidization and dryness is different. When you see the foundation its liquid and shiny but as the product gets applied it eventually dries down after a while which leds foundation to get darker. It’s always best to test the foundation in the sunlight rather than just looking at the mirror in the store. Natural lighting will show the true color in the skin. It could be totally different than it is in the store so make sure to go outside in the light when choosing your foundation! You can obviously get samples and try it at your home and see it in the sunlight to see the true color.

Its really important to follow these steps when choosing a foundation. Its so much than the just the foundation alone. Its about the complexion, texture, color, the formula. When you get it right you will have the perfect base. These little steps will make so much better for you to get the perfect match. And if you don’t get the perfect match with just one foundation you can easily mix two foundations to get the best shade for your skin tone!

Hopefully this post helps you to find your perfect match!
